Knowing your equipment

We can often think that we need expensive equipment to work things out but the truth is: it doesn't matter how expensive is your equipment if you don't know how to use it. Of course it helps, but you should be able to take good photos even using your cellphone if you know the basics.

Watch the available light

Photography basic is light. If you don't have good light available, your camera will adjust for lower light situations, and that's when we started to have grained photos. To be sure about a good quality photo, we need to watch the light.

Natural light

"Oh no, I don't have any fancy studio lights, this means my photo will suck?" Well, no. The biggest source of available light is... The sun!!! It's hard to overpower the sun with artificial lighting. the sun around noon gives a solid harsh shadow, and the sun around 5 to 6 am/pm will give you a beautiful golden light. But the trick is, photograph when is cloudy! The clouds will give you a  natural and even diffuse light.

Controlling the light

"I have some available lamps that I would like to give it a try". Like is well known, everybody it is a photographer until the use of the manual mode. Manual mode looks intimidating because you have to adjust everything manually. Switch to manual mode is a huge step for photographers! This means that we are not leaving to the camera to decide what it's important in our photo. We are taking control of every aspect of the photo. The difference between cellphone cameras and regular cameras is cameras register images with more pixels AND they will have more controls to adjustments. But even with the phone, a good start could be controlling the exposure, or how much light do you want to capture, or what will be the brightest spot on the photo. It is true that we can have an impressive look when we control the lights in our photo.

Are you lying to me?

"It's easier say all this stuff when the truth is you have an amazing camera to photograph". Well, I do have an amazing camera to photograph; HOWEVER, to prove what I'm saying here, All of these pictures was taken with my cellphone. Where is your God now?

What can cropping do for me?

In fact, sometimes (I mean most of the time when we want to make a photo more artistic instead of just capturing the scene) focusing in the detail that we want to show it is better than showing the whole scene. It is an easier way to produce some visual impact...

Think about composition

Well, it is a fact that I choose flowers here because they are naturally beautiful and it is really hard photograph flowers that ends really bad. But, That doesn't mean that I can't be more creative about how I'll compose the shoot. It's all about find an unusual point of view to make things interesting. The photography bible (just kidding, it doesn't exist such a thing) can say something about center your subject and bla bla bla, but you can have interesting results showing the subjects in one side of the photo, or make a good use of negative space. It's all to you to try different ways to compose your photo.

Go ahead and give it a try!

Practice leads toward perfection.
