As a Brazilian, black woman living in our current society, I believe that I have a moral obligation to do more than just explore beauty for its own sake. I want to instigate people to think about, critique, and analyze what is around them. I want to break through stereotypes, using tools that can be at the same time provocative, strong, sensitive, and unexpected. More than everything, I want the viewer to have a reaction when they see my artwork. The world is full of beauty. The world is full of pictures of nice sunsets, or nice days on the beach—people enjoying life. But what the world is hiding is exactly what we need to see and talk about. Bringing out hidden feelings is one of my goals as an artist.
As a visual artist, I enjoy exploring a wide range of visual media: drawing, painting, lithography, woodcut pictures, and metal engraving as well. I recently landed on photography, currently exploring all its satisfying possibilities. Conveniently, photography is also a medium that communicates well with people.
As a person, I like to explore the different sides of things. Not just for the drama, not just for one emotion or another. I like to explore color in my photographs and use color to provoke emotion. Also, inspired by the Baroque style, I use its deep visual contrast and heavy themes of suffering to add to the emotional impact of my work. I want to catch the viewer’s gaze at first glance and invite them to explore the various sides that my work has to offer. More than just the aesthetic, I like to bring out deeper themes. I like to use heavy emotions. I like to express ideas through irony. I present my thoughts, my point of view, and myself in a way that is brutally realistic. It is intense, polemic, raw, and unafraid to go places people would rather prefer to avoid.

“Sorry mom, but I couldn’t do anything different with my life other than only being an artist.”

I present my thoughts, my point of view, and myself in a way that is brutally realistic. I enjoy exploring a wide range of visual media to express my artwork. Not just for the “drama”, nor choosing one emotion or another. I like to bring out deeper themes. I like to use heavy emotions. I like to express ideas through irony. I want to catch the viewer’s gaze at first glance and invite them to explore the various sides that my work has to offer. I leave for the viewers how they will feel about my work. I usually work with ideas/concepts that are not very easy to deal with first, which it could be what they will consider or understand as “beautiful”. However, hardly to not noticed nor ignored. It is most provocative, reflexive. I would like to make the viewers of my artwork to think about what it is under the surface, and face what is truly hidden behind our smiles or social conventions. I believe that we will evolve and improve as people when we finally stop pretend to be “fine” and fight our fears. I would like to invite the viewer to make an honest inner reflection about their selves and finally face what it is truth for them.
